Toronto - Internationally renowned Cuban photojournalist and recent emigrant to Canada, Niurka Barroso will be presenting "Los Muros" at Studio 203 in Toronto, May 7th to May 20th 2011
Los Muros or Fences, is Niurka's story about her inner struggles over her identity as an emigrant from Cuba and about the 43 million souls that wonder outside her fences looking for sanctuary (referring to the 43.5 million people displaced or waiting for refuge status globally).
"Immigration brought a process of inner emigration: I traveled inside of myself, looking for new points of reference that would help to connect myself with the present. I have tried to transform, in images, the feelings I have kept inside during these years of exile. Exile produces an enormous sensation of anguish and up rootedness, flirting with the idea of return. But to return and discover one is not from here, nor there.
These twenty photographs are really my point of no return. Perhaps I will be a nomad forever. But now my journey inspires me more than my destination. These have been my first confessions."
